Why Vision Boards work when New Year’s Resolutions don’t.

1-out-of-10-sign

Only about 1 out of 10 people actually achieve their New Year’s Resolutions, give or take depending on which study you reference. No matter what research you check, the success numbers are surprisingly low considering how common it is to hear people talking about New Year’s Resolutions. If, like me, you belong in the group of unsuccessful and frustrated 9 out of 10, try a Vision Board this year instead.

New Year’s Resolutions are easy to make and hard to keep.

A lot of us start out the New Year feeling inspired to do and be better. Enthusiastically, we do things like…

  • Join gyms (that we’ll stop using in less than 6 weeks)
  • Buy juicers (we’ll later sell on Craigslist for half the price)
  • Download meditations (we’ll never take the time to sit down or meditate)
  • Delete our saved TV episodes (that we later replace with new must-see TV)
  • Set up savings accounts (that will still be empty in 3 months)
  • Scan Indeed.com for the perfect job (but never actually apply for)

And what does all of this do to our beginning-of-the-year motivation? It zaps it and we feel stuck!

New Year’s Resolutions don’t work for most people.

Rather than inspire, New Year’s Resolutions can turn into negative feelings. Like feeling…

  • Stressed (because people ask how you are doing with your resolutions)
  • Guilty (because you haven’t started them yet)
  • Disappointed (because you are not accomplishing what you hoped)

You are not alone.

Vision Boards work better (and more positively).

Vision Boards are a different way of visualizing your hopes and dreams and can replace resolutions. They don’t involve stress, guilt or disappointment. In fact, creating a Vision Board leaves you feeling…

  • Inspired about your future (Yep! Even after a few months into the New Year)
  • Clear about what you want (what YOU want, not what others want for you)
  • Motivated to move forward with ease (easier to do without stress, guilt or disappointment to block your way)

Famous people do them too. Katy Perry, Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey to name a few. It’s a thoughtful process of clarity, connection and inspiration. It’s also considered a visualization technique, just one of many that successful people use to bring their dreams into reality.

Create your Vision Board and get everything you want in 2017.

Convinced that a Vision Board might be a great alternative to New Year’s Resolutions this year? If you’re drawn to DIY-style, just Google “How to make a vision board,” and you’ll get plenty of information.

If you need more of a hands-on approach, like a workshop, and live in the San Diego area, we have a Vision Board Workshop coming up on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at Monarch Gallery in La Jolla. For more details: http://www.blissfulbutterfly.com/vb-info.html.
